Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) was created in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and is the grandfather of all roleplaying games (RPGs). The game of D&D involves a group of players, one of whom is the Dungeon Master (DM), going through an adventure in a fantasy world. It is the DM's responsibility to not only referee the rules of the game, but to bring the adventure to life through vivid descriptions and exciting encounters.
Most D&D players form groups that meet regularly. While some adventures can last more than one session, a DM should have multiple adventures lined up for his players. Fortunately, there are many places a DM can find excellent Dungeons & Dragons adventures for free.
ON THE WEB
Type "free dungeons and dragons adventures" into a search engine like Google (www.google.com) and you will get back over 100,000 hits (I got 162,000). I've listed below some of the best sites to visit:
- Wizards of the Coast D&D Adventure Archive (http://www.wizards.com/defaul t.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b): Wizards of the Coast (WotC) is the company that creates the D&D product line. Their website contains an archive of classic and new D&D adventures that are free for download.
- D&D Adventures (http://www.dndadventure.com): Believe it or not, but the first site that comes up in Google is not the company that makes D&D. D&D Adventures boasts an archive of over 500 free adventures that cover a wide range of character levels for both the second and third edition of the D&D rules.
- Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org): This website is a great resource for free adventures that use the first edition D&D rules, but any DM worth their dice could easily convert them to the current rules.
GAMING & HOBBY CONVENTIONS
National conventions, like GenCon, and regional conventions are often great places to find free adventures. Many publishers will give away some of their products as promotional material, so be sure to visit their booths. There may be a charge to attend the convention, but the number of free adventures you can collect more than make up for the admission fee.
FREE RPG DAY
Free RPG Day is an annual event that takes place on June 21 (the date can vary, but it's usually a Saturday in late June) where RPG publishers provide free material that players, and DMs, can pick up at their local hobby or gaming store. Publishers like Goodman Games, Mongoose, Paizo, Green Ronin and even WotC usually contribute a free adventure that can be used with the D&D rules.
YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY
It's quite possible that your library has copies of Dragon or Dungeon magazine, official D&D publications with adventures in them. Even if your library doesn't carry these magazines, they have hundreds of books that contain great ideas you can turn into free D&D adventures of your own.
There are many places a DM can find free Dungeons & Dragons adventures. They are a great way to keep players entertained without breaking a DM's budget. It still takes the DMs touch, however, to make an adventure great, whether it's free or not.
