A hub is a device used to connect computers. It broadcasts data sent from one computer to every computer, but only the intended receiver can see the actual data. This tends to be slow and wastes traffic. A router keeps a table of routes and is able to direct the data to it's receiver without sending data to any other audience. Hence a router is an intelligent hub. It is also able to determine the best route for data to travel in, increasing the speed of the transfer. Routers and packet switching (and splitting data into smaller bits called packets) are used to create fast transfer through the Internet. In essence, the router is an improvement over the earlier technology of the hub, which is rarely in use alone nowadays. Instead the hub will be part of many other features, such as in a modem.
