By taking good care of your teeth, and visiting your dentist every six months for a regular check up, will not only ensure that you are keeping your teeth in optimum condition, you could also be benefitting your general health in more ways than one.
A lack of oral care can have serious medical implications. Recent research has shown that there is an association between serious gum disease and conditions such as stroke, diabetes and heart disease.
As a person matures, the composition of their mouth will change. Your dentist will check to see if you have any loose or broken teeth, damaged fillings, or receding gums that may allow harmful bacteria to seep into tiny holes and cause decay. This can cause damage that does not always become apparent until the harm has been done.
Perhaps there are worrying signs that you could have oral cancer? If your dentist has any concerns he will be able to recommend a specialist or advise you to visit your doctor immediately.
Whilst the dentist checks for any underlying problems with your teeth, he will also clean them by removing old plaque, and offer to polish them for you. He can advise you on any problems or concerns you may have, and recommend certain products such as irrigators, mouth rinses and other oral hygiene products which will help you keep your teeth maintained to a good healthy standard.
You will be advised about the use of supplemental fluoride, which will strengthen your teeth, and you may be offered a dental sealant. This is a plastic protective coating which can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, affording extra protection from tooth decay.
Always remember to:
1. Brush your teeth twice a day and after each meal with ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste.
2. Floss between your teeth daily. This removes the bits of food that you can't see, and what the bristles of your toothbrush cannot reach.
3. Eat a sensible, well balanced diet, cutting down the consumption of too much sugary food. Try and keep your fluids low in acids or sugar.
5. If the bristles on your toothbrush become old or frayed then replace it.
6. Cut down or give up drinking and smoking.
So remember, a regular check up with your dentist will help prevent most of the dental problems that we all fear, whilst at the same time helping us to maintain a white and healthy smile!
