The benefits of tai chi for relieving arthritis pain

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese form of martial arts primarily used for self-defense. Today, tai chi is practiced by millions of people because of its therapeutic, meditative, and strengthening benefits.

According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, arthritis is the result of blocked or sluggish 'qi' in the body. Qi (pronounced 'chee') means 'life energy.' Qi's relationship with tai chi is simple; tai chi exercises are designed to unblock qi and allow it to flow freely.

Medical scientists have reported that tai chi has been instrumental in helping people stricken with debilitating arthritis. Patients have not only reported a decrease in pain, but also an ease in which they can perform daily routines.

One of the best programs for treating arthritis is the successful Tai Chi for Arthritis program. The program was developed by an Australian physician, Dr. Paul Lam, MD. The doctor was plagued with several bouts with arthritis while he was as a medical student.

Based on his own experience with the disease, Dr. Lam joined with a team of physiotherapists, rheumatologists, and tai chi instructors to create this simple, effective program.

Tai Chi for Arthritis program is modeled after the Sun style of tai chi. Sun is the best tai chi style to reduce arthritic pain. Sun style involves gentle exercises that engage the entire body - including joints, muscles, and the spine. The benefits of Sun Style for arthritis patients are as follows:

* It is relaxing, which encourages people to practice often.
* The exercises are easy to learn and involve only a few basic steps.
* Mobility and balance is improved.
* Movements are done in upright positions, requiring very little bending.
* Knees and hips are not under duress, and joints are kept flexible.

If you suffer from pain due to arthritis, it is necessary to begin with warm-up exercises to warm up stiff joints and muscles. Similarly, at the end of the routine, cool down exercise are beneficial to return your body to a normal resting state.

Tai chi works very well in reducing pain in arthritis sufferers regardless of age or physical condition. Many tai chi students are over age 60, and have a history of chronic diseases and limited mobility.

Tai chi movements are slow, deliberate, and rhythmic. The continuous flow of movement helps to strengthen the muscles in the body and build stamina.

Tai chi is safe for people with arthritis to practice daily, even for those riddled with severe pain. Aches and pain, and stiffness, lead to a lack of balance and coordination. To combat this discomfort, both physically and mentally, it is essential follow an exercise regimen regularly.

Exercising also lubricates the joints. This is important for arthritis sufferers because exercise prevents wear and tear. Blood circulation is increased, and so is your overall good health. Further, as your mind calms and you become more relaxed, pain associated arthritis becomes lessened.

Tai chi classes are available in most cities. Community centers and organizations for senior citizens offer classes on a regular basis.

Exercise at your own pace and ability and avoid trying to mimic the dreamlike, effortless movements of instructors who have years of expertise.

Tai chi has been proven to improve people's overall well-being. It's also been successful in promoting a positive mental attitude that's essential to living pain-free.
