Summer beauty: Overcoming body image issues

I'm a curvy size 12. There are days that I wish I were a size six. I used to get anxious this time of year when swimsuits and short shorts are the summer staple. But now that I'm approaching age 30, I've come to realize a few critical "truths" about body image.

The first thing I learned after many years of dating, is that, men love women's bodies, in all shapes and sizes. The idea that you need to starve yourself to get a date is just wrong. The number one thing people notice about you is your personality and how you carry yourself, not your clothes size. When I met my husband, my dress size was not an issue.

Secondly, I make sure to take care of myself. I've seen too many women let themselves go. Being curvy is one thing, being lazy and disheveled is another. We all know that exercise is critical for your health. At the very least, I suggest doing some walking three days a week. You will feel more confident and energetic. Also, put some effort into your wardrobe, sweat pants should be off limits Monday through Friday. It takes just as long to slip on a pair of nice dress pants as it does a pair of sweats. Do your hair and makeup on a daily basis, no more ponytails. And light up the evening with a pair of stilettos every now an again. People will take notice. Don't shy away from certain clothing styles you deem for "skinny" people. Wearing cute sleeveless summer tops and Capri's are a staple in my wardrobe. And I don't shy away from putting on a swimsuit.

Lastly consider all the women you know in your life. Undoubtedly their sizes range from petite to extra curvy. Consider what you've learned by observing their body images. Most of the women I look up to, no matter their sizes, have demonstrated tremendous confidence in themselves. My mother once told me, that when I'm in my 40's, I'll look back at my 20's and wish I had appreciated the body I had. Now I strive to love my body everyday. Yes, I'm a size 12 and will never appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. But I work out regularly to keep myself firm, toned and healthy. When I look in the mirror I see a confident, beautiful, voluptuous women. My husband loves my curves and I have to say , I do too!
