As fuel prices rocket, everybody is looking for ways to conserve gas and/or buy it cheaper. Whilst it is difficult to find cheap gas lately it is much easier to both optimize your truck to perform using less gas and/or buy a truck that has better mileage.
There has never been (and never will be) a way to accurately predict gas mileage due to varying driving styles, habits and unpredictability on fronts such as weight and engine optimization.
What we can do is buy a truck with good mileage and try to run it at its best, for that reason here is my list of the top five pickup trucks for approximate mileage:
(All trucks are the basic models and can be bought with similar mileage but different models.)
1. 2008 Mazda Truck B-Series B2300 Regular Cab 4X2
Fuel Type: Gas
Transmission: 5-Speed manual transmission with overdrive and floor mounted shifter.
Mileage: 19 (City), 24 (Highway)
Seats: 3
Engine Size: 2.3L
Approximate Cost: $14,671
My review: The best truck as mileage goes but it does have a small engine and buying it won't break the bank.
2. 2008 Chevrolet Truck Colorado Regular Cab 2WD Work Truck
Fuel Type: Gas
Transmission: 5-Speed manual transmission with overdrive.
Mileage: 18 (City), 24 (Highway)
Seats: 3
Engine Size: 2.9L
Approximate Cost: $14,500
My review: A quick truck with both good mileage and a decent engine at an affordable price.
3. 2008 GMC Truck Canyon Extended Cab 2WD Work Truck
Fuel Type: Gas
Transmission: 5-Speed manual transmission with overdrive.
Mileage: 18 (City), 24 (Highway)
Seats: 5
Engine Size: 2.9L
Approximate Cost: $16,500
My review: Possibly the most aesthetically pleasing truck on the market and still gives very good mileage. A decent engine size but a little expensive. Also brilliant if you need the extra seats.
4. 2008 Toyota Truck Tacoma 4X2 Regular Cab I4 Manual
Fuel Type: Gas
Transmission: 4-Speed adaptive automatic transmission with overdrive.
Mileage: 18 (City), 23 (Highway)
Seats: 3
Engine Size: 2.7L
Approximate Cost: $13,700
My review: Low price and quite a powerful truck. I've heard rumors of reliability issues though.
5. 2008 GMC Truck Canyon Regular Cab 4WD Work Truck
Fuel Type: Gas
Transmission: 5-Speed manual transmission with overdrive.
Mileage: 16 (City), 22 (Highway)
Seats: 3
Engine Size: 2.9L
Approximate Cost: $17,800
My review: I think you're paying for power with this truck. It is quite expensive with less mileage but more power than other trucks.
My verdict: I personally, would purchase either the Mazda or the Chevrolet because they are affordable and have good mileage. In the long run both of these vehicles could save you a fair few dollars and as they say; every little helps.
