Tips for selling your collections

While selling your personal collections may initially seem a complex and daunting task, it can nonetheless prove both a financially and emotionally rewarding experience. There are a wide variety of ways in which you can sell collections, and which of these you choose will be largely dependant on three factors, namely: the price range of the collection, its condition and its relative popularity.

When considering the sale of a collection in a high price range, such as a collection of antique furniture, the safest way to approach a sale is through contacting an antique dealer to provide a professional appraisal of the item (s) of interest. This allows you to confirm the price of any items and allows you to organise an appropriate marketing strategy for a potential sale. Perhaps the easiest option would be to allow the antique dealer to market and sell the collection on your behalf.

The main advantage of working though a professional antique dealer is that it allows you to delegate the complex tasks of marketing and selling to another more experienced individual or company. When using this method, it is important to negotiate a price with the dealer beforehand so upon conclusion of the sale, all parties involved are satisfied with the goods and the price. However, it is important to note that the dealer will receive a percentage of the gross selling price of your collection as well as a commission if the sale is successful. This will, consequently, result in slightly lower financial profit margins.

In order to maximize your revenue from the sale of a collection, another viable option would be to market and sell independently of an agent. Whether your sale is successful depends largely on the quality and type of marketing your items receive. This marketing can take the form of local newspaper advertisements, announcements or even notices on the Internet. It is imperative that you establish the veracity of any prospective buyer and negotiate a price in person to prevent possible fraud, and for this reason it is recommended that independent sale collections should be in the low to middle price range.

Logically, another method to ensure a successful and profitable sale is to market your collection in an area where individuals are interested in the item you are offering. For example, collections involving computers can be marketed in local technology magazines or announcement boards.

While it is far easier to market and sell collections locally, it is also possible to bypass geographical limitations without the use of an antique dealer or professional agency. There are several Internet sites which are both reputable and easy to use for this purpose. Perhaps the most popular of these is the eBay Corporation available at www.ebay.com, but there are also many other websites available such as eXpansys and Amazon.com which enable you to market and sell your items internationally.

In conclusion, there are a large variety of ways in which you can sell your collections, and which pathway you select will depend largely on the price, condition and type of collection for sale. Although the easiest option is to approach a professional antique dealer to help you market and sell your collection, your potential profits will also be diminished as the dealer appropriates a percentage of your earnings. As such, another viable option is to market and sell your collection independently, and this can be achieved both locally and internationally.

Regardless of which method you choose, selling your collections can prove an exciting and rewarding experience, both financially and emotionally.
