Indigenous to the south, the Beau d arc tree bears a peculiar fruit commonly referred to as a "horse apple". Every fall we head down to the creek where we find an abundance of horse apples lying on the ground. Each family member scours the terrain for just the right one. After inscribing our respective initials into the peculiarly textured green rind, we cast them into the slow moving current of the creek. Each family member strolls through the woods occasionally stopping to give their horse apple a nudge, using a stick as a means of steering. The first family member to usher their horse apple past the big rock, into the open field, is declared the winner.
