Devotionals are more than beneficial to Christians of every age. They are essential. Establishing a regular routine of reading and meditating upon God's Word during teenage years (or earlier) creates a firm foundation on which to build a purposeful, victorious life. Devotional programs assist teens in developing such a habit, by selecting and sequencing passages of scripture; expounding the context, meaning and relevance of set passages; provoking deeper thought and application of the Word; and encouraging consistency.

DEVOTIONALS SIMPLIFY A DAUNTING TASK

Without the help of a devotional program, reading the Bible can be an intimidating process. Many may begin the task of reading the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, only to become disinterested and distracted part way through Leviticus. Others have a few favoured passages or sections, to which they continually gravitate, leaving the bulk of the scriptures undiscovered. Devotionals strategically consider a wide cross section of God's Word, not necessarily in chronological order, and continued use of a particular program will give the devotee a comprehensive view of the whole Bible.

DEVOTIONALS SHED LIGHT ON SCRIPTURE

Writers of devotional material often clarify the meaning of passages which may seem obscure, strange or contradictory to teens. Without adding to, or taking away from, the Word of God, writers can explain the history and culture connected with specific texts and then relate such texts to life in the 21st century, for although times and cultures change, God's Word endures forever.

DEVOTIONALS INSPIRE

Just as God can speak through the words of a preacher, devotionals can illuminate different implications of the Word. Succinctly phrased notes stimulate thoughtful consideration of texts and enable readers to apply the Word of God to their daily situations. Brief, intriguing comments, with achievable Bible reading assignments are motivational for many teens, who may otherwise feel daunted by the task of reading the Bible.

DEVOTIONALS ASSIST ACCOUNTABILITY

The basic fact of having a nominated reading for each day of the year will assist some teens in maintaining a regular habit. A wide variety of material is available, ranging from classic devotionals such as Daily Bread, Every Day with Jesus and My Utmost for His Highest, to newer publications aimed specifically at teens. Devotional formats are varied, with the themed magazine style approach being particularly aimed at young people. Many Devotional Bibles are available, directed at specific age, gender or interest groups and include reading plans and devotional notes throughout the text.

The benefits reaped from developing a diligent devotional life cannot be overstated. God's Word gives light to life's path and it is essential nourishment to the Christian. For teens who may well be struggling with self concept issues, the Bible gives complete assurance of their identity and worth in God's eyes, through Christ. For teens battling with despair and disillusionment, the Bible is overflowing with words of hope and promise. In an uncertain, often dark and lonely world, the Word of God stands, unchanging - the testament of His love and His plans for His people.
