Poetry: Love between a mother and daughter

by Helen Kelly

Created on: May 07, 2008

Mother, you gave me life.
You watched over me,
and delighted in my first smile,
my first word,
my first step.
Your hands washed me,
picked me up when I fell,
combed the snarls out of my hair,
caressed me.
The years passed...
I grew into a young version of you.
Hoping to capture your grace,
your style,
your beauty.
I couldn't.
I rebelled...why be like her?
I needed to be myself,
to show you I was
just as good as good as you..
I wasn't.
I found myself...
I lost myself
You stood by...and waited.
Patiently... lovingly
Let me now watch over you.
Let me help you dress,
feed you,
comb your hair.
Let me be patient,
as you taught me.
Let me be loving,
as you showed me.
Let me finally become you.
