Daily Tips to Improve Dental Health.

Poor dental health has been linked to a number of serious health concerns, not the least of which is heart disease. And while dentists everywhere recommend at least two regular cleanings each year, many continue to neglect their teeth and therefore their health.

But what can you do at home to help ensure your pearly whites are getting the care they deserve? Step one is to brush your teeth regularly. Dental standards recommend brushing your teeth at least twice per day. But don't stop there. Make sure your brushing technique is up to par as well. Most of us consider brushing our teeth a quick part of the morning routine, barely giving them a minute of our time. However in order to actually remove plague build up your tooth brush must remain in contact with your teeth for a longer period of time, because it is the scrubbing action of your tooth brush that benefits your teeth the most. One great way to ensure you are brushing your teeth long enough is to brush along with your favorite song! This will guarantee that your teeth have been scrubbed well.

The next step is to include flossing in your regular routine. Now, I know you have heard this a million times. But it really is the most important step in your dental health care routine. It helps to unlock food particles that get stuck between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach (even with all that brushing!). I find that adding this step in before you brush your teeth helps to make it a more, how shall I put this, rewarding experience. When done first it becomes very obvious what food particles are hiding out between you teeth, and really re-enforces why flossing is important. Then you get to follow this up with brushing that will leave your move feeling fresh and clean.

And finally take some time to consider the products that you are using to care for your teeth. Would your teeth and gums benefit from a firm bristled toothbrush or a soft one? What toothpaste is right for you? Is a mouthwash beneficial or redundant? All of these are great questions to ask your dentist or hygienist the next time you are in for a cleaning. So give your dentist a call today and make sure you have your next cleaning scheduled, because it's not just your teeth we are talking about keeping healthy, it's your whole health.
