How to compost

Compost is the black gold of the garden. Making compost is the best way of getting rid of garden waste and generating natural organic matter to replenish and revitalize the soil.

If there is plenty of garden space, a simple compost pile can be developed this way:

* Select a spot at an out-of-the-way edge of the garden.

* You will need at least 10 to 20 feet of space to build two, 4 x 8 foot piles. If you wish you may construct sides of boards or concrete blocks, but this is not necessary. In fact, the compost is much easier to turn if sides are not used.

* Start your compost with a 6 to 9 inch layer of garden discards, weeds, grass clippings, leaves, etc. Tamp down well, wet it, sprinkle on a light covering of all-purpose fertilizer, and water well.

* Add a 6-inch layer of manure. (This can be purchased in a bag at the garden center.)

* Add a 3-inch layer of soil.

* Repeat this layering until the pile if about 4-feet high, with a layer of soil on top.

* Water until thoroughly wet.

* The top should be slightly concave to catch rain water.

Starting in the early spring, it is ideal to build your compost as materials become available. Water during dry periods in summer, and allow to stand at least 6 weeks.

* Turn the pile. The simplest way is take a shovel and move the compost to an adjoining space, turning over each shovelful as you to do. This should be a leisurely task, not back-breaking work.

* After turning, moisten again and place a layer of soil on top.

* Leave compost alone until ready to apply in your garden. The compost should not be used until everything is thoroughly decomposed; but summer temperatures, added moisture, and the fertilizer are usually enough so that the compost is ready in about six months.

* When you start to use your compost, build another pile in the original space.

* Many state extension agents will test your soil, and supply excellent information on composting and other materials that might be added to enhance the soil in your particular area.

* When your compost pile is properly constructed, there is no odor and it is not attractive to pests.

* Never use meat, dairy, or fatty products.

*Very often, it is convenient to buy or build a container and a turner, but the fanciest gadget operates on the principal given here.

THE MOST EXCITING THINGS ARE

* You will use your black gold in the garden wherever you need some good soil, or to enhance your existing soil:

* You will use it to loosen clay or heavy soil,

* It will help sandy soils retain water

* You will use compost tea (A bit of compost soaked for an hour in a bucket of water) to water plants.

* You will have an inexhaustible supply of humus (naturally organic soil) that will never harm or burn your plants, but will allow them to flourish happily as they bring you pleasure throughout the years.
