each of us giving a few dollars, or even opening the doors at big mama's house for a Sunday feast! Moreover, although we have an overabundance of food and waste close to 100 billion pounds of food each year, we still have no answer to the issue of feeding the poor. This begs the question, "Have we ever really searched for an answer?" Again, there is no easy answer to these problems, as frustrating as that is to hear. These issues exist on a great scale and need many different groups and sectors to function together in an effort to correct this problem. The first thing that needs to occur is for the U.S. Federal Government to appoint a specialized group to research these issues full time, and come up with reasonable solutions that can be discussed, debated and then put into action.
To reiterate, it is my strong belief that although the topic of this article is "feeding the poor," we must look deeper, because this is not just a cut and dry issue of: giving people food-problem solved! There are many different levels to this problem that go right to the heart of our countries moral obligation to its citizens. We must have sociologists, psychologists, politicians, doctors, and a host of other professionals team up in this effort and form a specialized organization if we are ever going to have a chance to turn this problem around.
Understanding what I've outlined hitherto, we may now move on to the hypothetical question: "How can we avert a global food crisis in the event of a disaster?" Well, the simple truth is, we can't or at least, we don't know that answer! How can we avoid a global food crisis when we can't even feed everyone in our own country at this moment, and we have more than enough food to do so? This answer also depends on the type of disaster that occurs and its affects. Is it a drought, an erupting volcano, decline of agriculture due to the vanishing bees or a decline in food due to human error or negligence? Pick your poison! The cold hard fact is that there is no way to determine what will happen to us or our way of life following a global disaster. One thing is for sure, humans really come together during a crisis and the best of human nature is displayed during these times. It's similar to a sports team's psychological state during the two minute warning; which leaves many fans saying, "Why didn't they do that the whole game?"
