With inflation at rise and prices increasing daily, we often wonder to ourselves that if we struggle to provide food to the poor today then how will we feed ourselves tomorrow?
It comes of no surprise to us that prices are reaching new hieghts. With oil prices above $120/gallon (6th May, 2008) and rice prices about a 100% more then usual, we find ourselves in the financial nightmare. All over the world there are questions raised and conferences held to find a solution to this crisis.
But then what are the solutions?
There are many actually, some on which the governments have already started work on, and others which are not even considered. Here are some factors that can be used to control this catatostrophe.
1. Population:
The human population is growing at an exponential rate. By the year 2035 our population is expected to double and along with it is our food and land demands. To help control the population control, governments from all around the globe need to come together and figure out a solution. One solution could be to figure out a way to donate money to those who have 2 children or less. Another would be educate the young about it, especially those in developing countries as they find having more children a suitable way of making sure that atleast one would survive.
2. Increase Agriculture
This a very obvious solution to the crisis. More people should be encouraged to join farming by offering subsidaries. An increase in agriculture would increase supply and thus decrease prices. Increasing agricultural land often leads to deforestation and eutrophication.
Recently the World Bank gave more then a billion dollars as loans and grants to the agricultural community. More works like this should be done.
3. Building free food houses for the poor.
In order to prevent starvation the government can budget the construction and running of free food houses open to everyone. Food could be donated and also made. There are some free food places in some country, especially in Ramadan, but in the future more would be needed.
Many other factors influence the global food crisis and should not be ignored as in this situations even the smallest of factors matter.
Please note that it is not upto the government to reduce the inflation but the decision to decrease it depends on us. Our actions influence the global food distribution and is upto us to reduce it as much as possible.
So I ask you to join hands and ovvercome this crisis.
