The game Ultratron is very reminiscent of arcade games such as Galaga and Space Invaders. Of course while this isn't necessarily appealing seeing as how the two games it is similar too were massive hits of their time, Ultratron is a game worthy of at least a trial period. The game pits you as this mech type thing out to kill robots, a bit cliche? Yes, but that little bit of nostalgia really pushes this game along when you find your interest wearing thin.
The controls are at best confusing, trying to figure everything out was about as easy as achieving a high score, but then again who plays games for them to be easy? Ultratron does have it's plus sides, while playing I encountered at least a dozen different kinds of enemies, as well as a few power ups that made the little laser type projectiles I was shooting work even better. (Try finding that in Galaga.)
Another really cool touch to the game is that it isn't like the retro style shooters that have you placed at the bottom of the screen, it gives you a feel of control to be moving around that really can't be described. Of course in that sense it also requires you to learn something entirely new with controls that already don't scream, "pick up and play".
Another aspect that I particularly found enjoyable was the online scoreboards. In Ultratron there is a highscore table that counts all the bests as they send in their top scores. While I didn't manage to score too high up on this list, it's very cool to have the scoreboard. It's like an incentive to play, to become the best. After all aren't games a bit funner with some competition?
I think where Ultratron really shines is in the graphics department. (Haha no I'm serious.) The game is actually pretty solid there, the graphics are retro at best, but that adds to the feel of the game. Sure they could have made the game with graphics similar to some of the new big hits out on the market, but then it wouldn't have that feel that most of us can remember from our days plunking quarters into an arcade machine.
Of course at the end of the day the game is still a solid tribute to retro games, it is worthy of at the very least a trial run. Ultratron is a hit or miss, like so many other classic arcade games, and for this writer at the very least, it was just a bit too far from home.
