Movie reviews: Eragon

I will admit that the story "Eragon" was very good for such a young author. Even though there has been criticizing remarks about it being similar to other novels like Lord of the Rings and Star wars (yeah it is kind of similar)

Now on to the movie. It's a given that the movie will never have a hundred percent of the details in the book or theaters would be running some five hours shows. (imagine Lord of the Rings exactly like the book. We all know how long that one was in edited mode.) The trailers looked decent, but that was hardly the surprise that Eragon fans were waiting for.

the appearance of people will vary, so I won't judge the makers on that. Somehow I thought Edward Speelers fit the appearance of Eragon even though there were differences. the part that really irritated me were the numerous details that these makers decided to take liberty with. First off, Eragon was fifteen in the book not this seventeen year old in the movie. Second, the personality of Eragon was just horrible. I couldn't believe it was Eragon. What was the problem? Eragon in the movie was way too arrogant. He seemed just about ready to do anything without thinking. he was demanding and doing stuff his own way. Come on now, Eragon at least had some respect for the teachings of other people. From the movie interpretation, it's Eragon stupidity that killed Brom. That's right. Brom didn't die because he was saving Eragon.(well I mean he wanted to.) Brom saved Eragon because Eragon thought he could go on and save the Elf. so what happens? he ends up fighting the shade and figures he'll be fine with Bringsr. as we saw, he wasn't and if it wasn't for Brom, he would be dead. And it gets better from there.

It was sad, but I don't know what kind of budget this movie was on. So many important characters were cut that it wasn't even funny. It's going to be hard to do a sequel because most of them have simple scenes or referenced once. Angela the witch is actually has an important role in the books. What does she get? Just a five minute scene where she reads Eragon's fortune and her name is not mentioned. her companion, Solembaum, was cut. That was dumb since he tells a part of Eragon's future that will reveal its importance in the near future. the dwarf Orik got cut. another charcter needed in the near future. I could go on and on with this area

the story had too many changes to it. first of all, the razaac are not killed that easily in the first book. In fact they're still running around. it has not yet been determined how Eragon will do against them since they have killed several people easily already. Oromis, Eragon's teacher in Eldest, has said that they are made to hunt humans. Even if the humans gain different attributes, the implied warning is the Ra'zac are not to be taken lightly. the final battle between durza and Eragon was another one. he should of gotten a huge scar from that fight. since he didn't, I don't know how a sequel could be made. that scar is featured prominently in the next book. Not something you can ignore. And that's not all of it.

It was just an utter disappointment. I was not surprised to hear that Eragon dropped seventy percent in sales by its second week. by second week I mean the week after it opened. it was just really, really, bad. watch at your own risk
