Before the internet arrived, there were many "work at home" opportunities around, but very few of them really compared to real business or real jobs. Most such work at home was in the same domain as paper rounds, and though the better ones paid reasonably, none really offered any longterm prospects. Above all what they didn't offer which you get if you work at home on the internet, is the opportunity for high growth, comparable to that of normal SMEs.

There are four different strata of jobs you can do if you work at home on your computer today in 2008. The most commonly pursued method currently is "Google Monetization". That is, you allow Google to take over a small part of your page or pages, and they pay you every time any one merely clicks inside that space. You may get an average of 30 to 50 cents for each click you sell to Google. Google does all the work, you do nothing. There are many ways that you can get paid for selling clicks to Google but all of them require some form of page content. To work at home in this field you can either publish sites or join people who share their revenue with you for producing content on their site.

The next strata of work at home opportunities, one which used to be the biggest strata but now is in second place after Google, is "the affiliate networks" - who basically pay similarly to Google but rather than paying per click they tend to pay for sales generated as a result of clicks you give them. They require much more effort if you work at home since you have to put the adverts on your page yourself and make sure they are relevant. This form of work at home is very lucrative and if you are good with words and can generate 100s of 1000s of well-earned dollars per annum.

Another way to work at home using the internet is to join freelance work at home boards - there are many around, some of them posting 100s of new freelance jobs daily, enabling thousands to work at home permanently. You can work at home in data entry, programming, design, all kinds of work which can be done at home as easily as an office. When you work at home for companies and websites you are just as useful to them, and so it is by no means a disadvantage. In some respects, the corporate world has to profit more from people who work at home, since it reduces the overall costs spent by society on transport.

But by far the most successful way to work at home, although the least pursued, is to be an entrepreneur doing work at home on your own online business. On the one hand this can be a totally online phenomenon, such as a website that performs a service, be it dating or sharing cocktail recipes or reporting the news. And though less such endeavors succeed overall, they are right now one of the easiest way to make millions in the modern world, not just for those who work at home. The other way to work at home connected to a real business is if you have a business that was doing well before the online world came into being. If that is the case you have the strongest way work at home for wealth. You use the internet to advertise that business and in that way you can yield far more than the advertising revenue from a page. However you ought to be capable of doing all the other methods of work at home first.
