NBA team profile: 2007/2008 Sacramento Kings

21 games, and Artest missing 25 games.

Overall, the Kings finished 11th in the Western Conference, well out of the playoffs race, where a minimum of 50 wins was needed to make it in the West this season.

However, on a positive note for Sacramento, they did achieve their initial aim of improving on their 2006-07 season, ending up bettering last year by five wins in total.

Despite this, due to the ultra-competitiveness in the West this season, they actually still missed the playoffs by a bigger margin this season (12 games), as opposed to last season (eight games).

Disappointingly for the franchise, after selling out every home game at ARCO Arena since 1999, the Kings could only manage to sell out three home games in season 2007-08, averaging a poor 13,500 per game.

Whilst I continually harped on the Kings lack of consistency during season 2007-08, the upside is that they didn't suffer any really lengthy losing streaks.

They showed some great competitiveness and tenacity at times, to fight through adversity, and recorded some good victories over such storied franchise's as Detroit, San Antonio and Dallas.

Whilst they still have mostly a roster of "no-name" players, they continue to present, night after night, and you know when you play the Kings, you are always going to be in for a contest.

This is something Theus and his men can build upon, and base a successful future around.

Provided the starters can play a full season next season, and if the Kings can again get busy in the off-season, having a couple more draft selection to shore up the future, as well as trading aggressively and trying to bring in season, All-Star caliber talent, then the Kings are a definite chance of returning to playoff action in season 2008-09.

I feel it's highly unlikely that next season will again see a playoff cutoff line in the West of 50 wins, probably around 44 or 45 should make it, and I believe the Kings are capable of winning this number.

The Kings should definitely aim to reach the lower seeds in the playoffs next season, and anything less should be viewed as a mass failure.
