Guide to non-prescription medications for arthritis pain

Studies have shown that people tend to under report how much over the counter drugs they are taking. This is because most think they don't count or of little consequence as they can be obtained without a prescription. But these drugs have side effects and can be dangerous if not taken as directed or if they interact with any prescription drugs the person is using.

Over the counter drugs for arthritis are no exception and the user should be aware of the risks involved and relate back to their physician exactly what they're taking.

Acetaminophen is sold under the brand names of Tylenol and Datril. While if taken as directed it is generally safe it can cause liver damage if taken incorrectly or with too much alcohol.
The body rids itself of acetaminophen by changing it into metabolites that can easily eliminated. But in the case of an over dose there is too much of the metabolite for the body to safely eliminate. The result can be liver damage. If you're all ready receiving prescription medication check with your doctor as acetaminophen is an ingredient of many pain medications.

NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are available at your local market. These drugs are used for their pain-killing (analgesic) ability, their anti-inflammatory properties and their fever reducing (antipyretc) properties. These drugs work by blocking the production of prostaglandins which contribute to pain and inflammation. However postaglandins have their purpose in the body. They help protect the stomach lining, blood clotting, regulate salt and fluid balance and maintain blood flow to the kidneys. By blocking the postaglandins NSAIDs can cause peptic ulcers, bleeding, fluid retention and kidney damage.

Aspirin is considered a salicylate which is a sub-category of NSAIDs. It can cause stomach upset and internal bleeding. Some tablets come coated which will help ease stomach upset.

Ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve) and Ketoprofen (Odrudis KT and Actron) are part of the main NSAIDs group. It is important with these as with any drug to follow directions.
Also it is recommended that these, aspirin included, be taken with a glass of milk or food to prevent stomach upset. Many prescription drugs are or contain an NSAIDs so it is essential that you tell your doctor what you're currently taking. You may be taking two of the same type of drug. Also if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks a day it may be best to avoid these drugs.
