NBA team profile: 2007/2008 Sacramento Kings

OVERVIEW

The Sacramento Kings were a team in flux entering last year; a team that still had solid players but was getting older. For Sacramento, it had become obvious that it was time to start over. The question to management was: How can the Kings best rebuild their roster without completely starting over?

On June 19. 2007, the Kings hired Reggie Theus as the franchise's twenty-first head coach. Theus was brought in to help guide the team toward its new incarnation and to help determine the franchise's future.

Injuries dictated the answer to part of the question. Ron Artest missed the first seven games of the year with a league suspension, and Mike Bibby lost 36 games to injury. Plus, Shareef Abdur-Rahim only played six games all year. This allowed the Kings to play a lot of different lineups and match-ups to see exactly what they had - and the decision was made to move point guard Mike Bibby to Atlanta for Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and a 2008 second-round draft pick. This trade showed that the Kings are willing to move on, and it freed up a ton of cap space for the upcoming two seasons should Sacramento decide to make a move in free agency.

The Kings, unlike most rebuilding teams, actually won five MORE games (38-44) than they did the previous season (33-49).
