"Putting yourself out there" is quite possibly the most daunting task for any new business owner. Consumed with all the other details relating to owning a business, people often fail to fully utilize all networking opportunties available to them.
1. See what the other guys are doing. Advertising in a newspaper or trade publication is a natural choice and a good one. But make your ad stand out. You are only going to engage a reader for a certain period of time so you may as well catch their eye. If you have no ideas or experience in creating ads of this type seek out those who can help you put together an effective ad layout.
2. Your greatest marketing help will come from customer referrals. If you are smart you will service the heck out of your clients. Many will repay your efforts with a referral to a friend or some other contact they have. This is a great way to add to your potential source of new clients.
3. Join your local Chamber of Commerce or related trade associations. These can not only help you to network, but you will be exposed to other owners of businesses who can share success stories with you.
4. Even though it sometimes feels self-serving, talk about what you do at social events when mingling with others. Just don't make it seem you are on a mission.
5. Your family and friends can also be a source for networking.
6. See if some other local businesses would be willing to post your business cards or fliers at their location.
7. Don't give up. Establishing a reputation takes a long and consistent effort. It is ongiong and always evolving.
