while a bit of a rogue, never loses sight of his humanity. Once he realizes what he was born for, he never turns from his purpose.
Surprisingly, for such a womanizer, Tony Stark depends a lot on his faithful assistant Pepper Potts, as played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Instead of shielding her from his new lifestyle and hiding under the cloak of anonymity, he involves her in his journey as almost an equal. In doing so, he seems to see her in a different light. Their attraction leaps off of the screen, creating a delicious sexual tension that the audience knows will carry on to future sequels.
And "Iron Man" does expect to see future sequels. In a shout out to the fans of "War Machine" from the comic book, Colonel Jim Rhodes - trusted friend of Tony Stark (played by actor Terrence Howard) tells a secondary suit, "Next time, baby."
If you're a fan of the comic book you should definitely stick around after the credits, for the surprise bonus scene at the end.
Jeff Bridges shaves his head to play the villain Obediah Stane, and convincingly portrays the greedy, dark side of war profiteering.
In a supporting role, director Jon Favreau steps into the part of Hogan, Tony's driver. But his biggest achievement is on the screen. Even in the CGI dominated action scenes, you can forget that you're watching a "movie", or special effects. Such is a feat for any director in today's cinema.
All together, cast and crew weave together a tale of action but also of character. These are people you want to see more than once. I have no doubt that "Iron Man" will match its opening weekend box office total of over $100 million easily, through word of mouth and also with those who will want - no, need - to see it more than once.
Welcome to summer. Thank you, Iron Man.
