Online group review: Myspace.com, Sage Circle

Myspace.com Groups is a section of the massively popular social networking site that consists of self sufficient forums where like minded individuals can share and debate, chat and interact, with their virtual fellows. The groups are divided into interest categories, ranging from anything from sport to religion. Within each category the individual groups are listed by total membership, and there is a search function if you wish to find a particular group. Each individual group has its own homepage which often features an introduction to the goals of the group, its rules, and displays the most recently posted forum threads. The groups are watched over and protected by a moderator or moderators who have the power to delete inappropriate or nuisance causing threads and expel and ban troublesome members from the group.

The Sage Circle is a modest group of around 650 members in the religion and beliefs section of Myspace.com Groups. A long standing group it has been run for several years by the extremely knowledgeable moderator and owner, Bright Black. The Sage Circle provides those seeking Pagan and spiritual knowledge with a place to congregate online and share their thoughts and information.

While the relatively small membership of the group means that posts are few and far between, this doesn't actually hamper the Sage Circle. Bright Black (sometimes referring to herself as 'the librarian') seems to run the group more as an online source of information than a place for members to debate and exchange small talk. It is far more likely that posters will present information or provide links to where it can be found than engage each other in idle chatter.

While it is not a group used for socialising, the Sage Circle provides a wealth of Pagan information in its archived posts. Almost every topic has at some point been covered in the group and all it takes is a little time and effort searching through the back posts to find a topic that you are interested in. Where posters do not provide first hand information, they often link and refer to outside sources, giving those seeking the information a good place to start their search.

In short if you are searching for a group where you can socialise with others who share similar spiritual interests, you should search elsewhere. If, however, you are looking to ask for some information or are willing to look through older posts to find it, the Sage Circle is a deep well of knowledge from which you can draw.
