So you want to DM but making an entire world is a bit beyond what you are willing to invest?
There are free campaigns available online if that's the route you want to take. Many of these are previously published and now available for download, just the thing if you and your group aren't experienced and are looking to explore without minding if the game world is well known in hardcore circles. I've created an entire list of campaigns are perfectly adequate for an adventure - especially if you add in a bit of your own imagination! They can be a good way to ease into creating your own adventures with the benefits of a campaign backbone to keep you from going astray. So go ahead and try out some free adventures: you just need to have an open mind and an idea where to look.
http://www.wizards.com/de fault.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b is a listing of Wizards of the Coast classic campaigns which are free to download and range from 1st to 20th level with a huge range of gameworlds. This is definitely a great place to start!
http://www.wizards.com/d efault.asp?x=d20modern/oaa/ful l is another archive of games from Wizards of the Coast but these are more modern, including a couple of Team Bravo adventures.
http://www.farlandw orld.com/tools.html#adventures is a whole set of adventures and NPCs available for download as ZIP files along with other tools for the DM, including riddles and traps and collections of herbs. This is a great resource for any DM, not just the beginner.
http://64.17.155.164/ gr_files/blue_rose_fast_play.p df offers a detailed romantic fantasy campaign for the World of Aldea.
http://www.sjgames.com/p yramid/sample.html?id=721 is a Disc-world Adventure with pre-defined characters playing the Watch on Hogswatch Night using GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) which can offer a quick and easy entry into role-playing for those who aren't convinced by epic fantasy.
http://www.sjgames.com /pyramid/sample.html?id=1644 is a similar concept in the world of ancient Japan, Lady Mijiko's Holiday includes details for fitting the campaign into GURPS, AD&D, RuneQuest and Bushido.
http://www.basicfantas y.org/ is a cut-down version of D&D 3.5 edition but more importantly the author has included a number of campaigns - Morgansfort is a rich world full of description and backstories for the NPCs. The campaign includes pre-populated dungeons and can easily be adapted for standard D&D without being limited by the Basic Fantasy rule-set.
http://www.dndadventu re.com/ offers a very detailed campaign called The Masks of Destiny with a step-by-step overview of the world and the campaign along with a number of sub-plots. Simply click on Campaigns to see the details
http://www.roleplayingt ips.com/downloads/5RoomDungeon s_Vol01.PDF is a set of 5-room dungeons which you can drop into an existing campaign or use to base a larger adventure on. It also includes a template at the end of the PDF for creating your own 5-room dungeons.
So don't be concerned at the implication that the only way to DM is to make up your own campaign - plenty of great games have been based on other people;s campaigns and you don't have to shell out hard cash to experience a rich world.
