It is true enough that those people who are in any business must earn a profit in order to remain in business and stay healthy and alive. In that regard, a person who is an antique dealer is no different.
So too, antique dealers have a few ways to earn money for themselves. That is, if they know the value of the items that they buy and resell to collectors. Knowing the market place is also a valuable tool of the antique business, and, as the old saying goes: "Experience is the best teacher."
If you require the services of an honest antique dealer, the following will be helpful to you in selecting that person to value your collection and maybe even sell some or all of that collection that you gathered for so many years. Then too, you might have bought something in a yard sale or a flea market that might have a great deal of value to a collector of such items.
As such the antique dealer you choose to value your items must have a place of business where the public can see and buy the items that are available for sale. That person must also have some years of experience and maybe even be a member of the business association within the area in which that person conducts his business.
You can expect to pay an appraisal fee for that person's assessment of the value of your items. More often than not, you will sell those items, one way or another, and you should have some idea of their worth in the current marketplace. Then again, if you do have a valuable collection that you want to keep, such an appraisal can be used if you want to insure that collection.
Like it or not, most or all of what you have is only worth what another person is willing to pay for your items. Having obtained you estimate of worth, you can now sell what you have and that antique dealer can assist you with the sale by putting your items in his or her store. For doing so, he or she will earn a percentage of the sale price for each item that is sold.
Some dealers also have weekly or monthly auctions of items where buyers go to bid for each item that is offered for sale. Based on the knowledge and experience of that antique dealer, you can set a minimum price that you would be willing to accept, or the dealer won't sell the item. In doing so, the antique dealer also earns a commission for each item that is sold during the auction event.
Another way for the antique dealer to earn money is to simply buy those items that he or she believes will earn a profit. They usually make an offer or just pay the seller the asking price of what is purchased. So you see, an antique dealer does have several ways in which to earn a living within what has become a truly popular way to earn a living.
So much so that the best of the lot can be seen on television, staring in many of the antique shows that most collectors watch each week. Here again is another way for that dealer to earn a good living. Do you have a collection of antique items?
