Predicting baseball's future is more difficult than any other American sport. Baseball prospects have a longer road ahead of them after the draft than football and basketball. Most draft picks never mature into the studs the teams hope they become or get injured in the process of improving in the minor leagues. A few of my top ten have not made their Major League debuts yet, but in five years all of these players will have made multiple All-Star Game appearances.
Here are my top ten in reverse order:
10. Clayton Kershaw, LHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angelese Dodgers farm system is always the deepest in the league. Their coaches and scouts are among the best in all of baseball. Clayton Kershaw is a huge left-hander (6'3 210lbs.) with some powerful stuff. He was drafted in the first round out of high school. The rumor around the league is that he has the ability to be a #1 starter in the league. He will end up seeing a call-up at some point this year. The Dodgers usually have plenty of pitching, but with the ability and control Kershaw is showing in the minors, it is hard to overlook him.
9. Max Scherzer, RHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Max Scherzer could be the National League strikeout king by this time next year. He has the stuff to blow by the batters with his fastball. In the minor league, he struck out 38 batters in a little over 23 innings. He was recently called up and has already proven he belong in the Major League. He will be added to the rotation that already has Randy Johnson, Dan Haren, and Brandon Webb. Arizona will make Scherzer their 4th or 5th starter and already gives their starting pitchers plenty of run support. Scherzer could be the final piece the Diamondbacks needs to win another championship in the desert.
8. Adam Jones, OF, Baltimore Orioles
Adam Jones was obtained in the Erik Bedard trade with Seattle Mariners. He was Seattle's best prospect and it took them to trade Jones to get one of the best pitchers in the league. Jones has shown to be able to hit for power, average, and can run the bases well. He will be the centerpiece the Orioles plan to build around for the future. Defensively, he may be the best of all the young players. Plenty of scouts compare him to Torii Hunter of the Angels, which proves he can cover a lot of ground in the outfield. Jones will be an All-Star within two seasons and help the Orioles compete in the AL East.
7. Justin Upton, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona keep the prospects flowing from their farm system and they
