Songs: Today's society

by Marisa Crane

Created on: May 05, 2008

Just so everyone knows, this is a rap, that's why some of the grammar is incorrect.

Where is the love
in the world today?
I don't wanna look up
when all I see is gray.

God be crying for ya'll,
Satan be lying to ya'll.
Full of empty promises,
he won't be there when you fall.

Out on the streets
you know it's rough.
Can't go two blocks
without seeing someone cuffed.

What's the source of all the violence,

no one knows.
Little brother watch and learn,
as he grows.

He wants to be just like his idol,
so he be imitatin'
every move that you make,
even when you're hatin'.

You gotta learn to watch your mouth
when the little one's around.
He remembers everything you say
and every little sound.

Do you want that sound to be
gun shots on your porch?
So when he grows up
you can pass on the torch.

His future is set out
by the situation he was given.
Just another drug dealer
is the life he'll be livin'.

There is no concern
for others on this earth.
In our ethnocentric ways
we think we have more worth.

Kids be starving all over,
without so much a second glance.
They're fighting for their lives,
praying that they have a chance.

Nobody is feeding them
as they starve to death.
We hear their pleas for help
as they breathe their last breath.

But don't anyone know,
that not lending a hand
is the same as hurting
by not helping them stand.

It's neglect that hurts the most,
don't you know?
Our plan to help the people,
we can never forgo.

With all this talk of troubles
across the sea,
we've got racism here
in our own country.

People deny that it's present,
but the hatred rings true.
We say we don't discriminate,
'cause we won't admit that we do.

The color of your skin
shouldn't matter at all.
But we talk down to others,
making them feel small.

We convince ourselves
that we're better than another.
Just because his skin's different
doesn't mean he's not a brother.

Violence penetrates schools
and all we do is watch.
What happened to the old days
when we played hopscotch?

Those days are in the past,
the future is now.
We need to embrace everyone
even if we don't know how.

Gay, straight, bi,
it don't matter to me.
Everyone deserves a chance at love,
equally.

I don't care who you be lovin',
as long as it feels right.
If it's in the name of love,
then how can we fight?

It's the money-hungry people
who be driving me up the wall.
They gotta build themselves up,
to make them feel tall.

The men who live for gain
are the ones who live alone.
Counting their possessions,
showing off what they own.
