You've been working all night on a report due the next morning, but when one of the keys presses down with no return, you are literally stuck in the middle of your report. A half empty cup of coffee sits nearby with a plate full of cookies on the other. You know, from memorization, where the keys are for typing. Some time long ago the letters faded under layers of finger grime. But don't despair. Hopefully, you remembered to add the automatic save feature to your report, and now it's time to fix the problem.
Like any repair person in their trade you're going to need some tools: A can or two of compressed air, some glass cleaner, Rubbing Alcohol (80% dilution), lint-free clothes, a pair of tweezers, and a Phillips screwdriver.
Once you have collected your tools it is time to get started.
First, unplug all the devices connected to your computer. You may want to wrap up cords or secure them in easy to reach places. Nothing is more annoying then fiddling with cords trying to grasp them where the fell discarded. Make sure to unplug your computer from any electrical outlets as well.
Second, dampen a lint-free cloth with a little rubbing alcohol. Just a dab will do it. Next, you want to run the cloth over each of your cords and cables. You may need to use an extra cloth depending on the last time you cleaned them. If you have little ones running around the house, cords and cables can get sticky and discolored with grime.
Cleaning your unit:
If you have a desk top computer, remove the side cover of the computer case to expose the hardware. Get out your compressed air, aim, trigger, and fire! Blast everything in your computer with air. Make sure to pay special attention to the fan on top of your processor as it collects most of the dust. Check every nock and cranny, don't forget card slots and hard to reach areas. Replace the side cover when you're finished. Be sure to check cables and make sure they are not close to any of the fans before shutting the case.
Tip: Do NOT spray hardware at close range. Be sure to read the directions on the back of your compressed air for proper distance.
Cleaning your mouse:
There are two types of mice ball mice and optical mice.
Hopefully, these are the only type of mice allowed in your house. They probably get handled every day, and might be starting to discolor from your constant tapping and "petting". If you don't have one already, a mouse pad, is a wise investment for prolonging the useful life of your mouse.
