With some indifferent form in recent seasons, the 2007 off-season saw National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise the Minnesota Timberwolves trade heavily, to try and get together a winning formula.
The ball began rolling in mid-June of 2007, when Minnesota traded Mike James and Justin Reed to Houston for the reasonably-talented Juwan Howard.
Next came the 2007 NBA Draft, which saw the Timberwolves have two selections.
With pick number seven overall, they chose Florida forward Corey Brewer, and then with their second pick, pick 41 overall, they chose power forward Chris Richard, also from Florida.
Then. on the last day of July, the Timberwolves reached a deal to trade Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics for Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, two first-round draft picks, and cash considerations.
This was the largest combination of players and picks ever traded for a single player in NBA history.
To begin the NBA pre-season, the Timberwolves headed to Europe for the 2007 NBA "Europe Live" Tour, where, among others, they faced Garnett's Boston Celtics, and lost by 11 points.
The Timberwolves didn't set the world on fire in the pre-season, and nearing the beginning of the regular seson, Minnesota made yet another trade, this time trading Ricky Davis and Mark Blount to Miami in exchange for the Heat's Antoine Walker, Michael Doleac, Wayne Simien, and a 2008 protected first-round draft pick (lottery-protected in 2008, top 10 in 2009, top 6 in 2010, beyond: unprotected).
Then, just days before the beginning of the season, the Timberwolves waived Juwan Howard's contract after reaching a monetary buyout agreement.
Minnesota also waived Simien, and traded a top-56 protected NBA draft pick to San Antonio for cash and Beno Udrih, who was immediately waived in order to finalize Minnesota's list down to 15 players.
Going into the regular season, minnesota boasted the youngest list in the NBA, and their cause was further harmed when budding talent Randy Foye got injured and was forced out for the first half of the season.
Minnesota's season began disastrously, as they dropped their first five games. They defeated Sacramento in their sixth game of the season, before dropping another five in a row, and finished the month of November with a poor 2-12 record.
Things did not improve in December, as Minnesota began the month with three losses in a row, then endured another two lengthy losing streaks of six games and five games respectively.
