Stem cells ar ethe stuff of life. When a young baby is first developing it is a mass of simple cels that will split and divide and use the DNA inherent in them to become ears, and hair, and skin and bnes and teeth and people! These cells are blank slates, waiting for DNA to be inscribed on them. All arguments about religion and the Soul aside, this is the simplest way of describing tissue. Dogs, Cats, Sheep, People, Llamas, are all formed from deviding cells in their mother's womb that seperates into various body cells.
Human geneticists have discovered that by using these blank cells we can build new tissue, skin cells, ear drums... anything that we program these cells to do, they will create them. They can be used to combat viruses, germs and deformities that were once incurable. they can even create nervous tissue, a substance that doesn't replicate normally in humans. When someone gets their spinal column bashed in by a speeding drunk driver, or severs their spinal chord in a horse accident like Chris Reeves; these cells can be used to form new tissue! They are a vital force in the coming year sof science.
Religious issues surround these cells useage. Churches see life as sacred and refuse to acknowledge that these cells are just cells. Hospitals discard thousands of aborted fetuses a year that could be used to save lives, but the religious right refuses to let science do anthing about it! California has enacted a law that allows them to fund the scientific dicoveries that could save millions of lives. It is in our power to help!
