Terrorism

The links between religious issues and terrorism

Religion, violence and terrorism has plagued the world for millennia where followers of a given system of belief attempted to impose their way of life and belief on those choosing otherwise. Indeed human history is a tragic panorama of faith-imposed slaughter that sometimes decimated an entire race of people for the crime of not believing what they were told. Christians persecuted by the Romans resorted to violence that proved mostly futile yet these attacks were viewed as acts of terrorism.

In colonial times missionaries often accompanied warships and soldiers on expeditionary voyages of discovery and conquest where again the unholy side of human nature strove to impose systems of belief on unwilling populations who soon found themselves marginalized as colonists began to arrive and take over. The inevitable consequences were disaffected people resorting to guerrilla warfare that rapidly escalated into organized retaliation, and more bloodshed followed.

The 21st century world is in no better state of affairs, particularly in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East. Islam is the prevailing religion yet within Middle Eastern society there is no consensus, agreement or stability under religious authority or rule. Discounting current Western influences and presence more Muslims are killed by other Muslims in terrorist attacks in the Middle East each day as divisions and new splinter groups form, disband and reform without end. In Pakistan the crime of playing Western music, congregating in a caf or even watching television is sufficient grounds for an extremist bomb the religious division within Islam is as complex as it is deadly to the world in general.

With few exceptions terrorist attacks over the last two decades were are carried out by Islamic extremists an undeniable fact proudly and publicly declared to world media when such attacks succeed in killing innocent men, women and children. With a religion unable to get along with itself it seems the world stands little chance of staving off future attacks.

Exacerbating the problem globally is the unlimited financial resources poured into Western nations in setting up Islamic schools and institutions based on the Saudi version of Whabbism a particularly intolerant and militant brand if Islam. The inevitable outcome is homegrown extremists indoctrinated by Saudi-trained Imams who run these institutions. The London bombings of 2004 were a graphic demonstration of religion directly
