Auto Insurance

Choosing between car insurance companies

Any one that has ever been through the process of filing a claim after an automobile accident knows how important it is to have good insurance coverage. Insurance agents and claims adjusters are often less than helpful when you need them.

When buying auto insurance coverage it is important to know what type of insurance coverage you need on your vehicle. If you have an older vehicle that is paid for you may want to consider purchasing liability coverage. Liability in most states is all you're legally required to carry on an owned vehicle. Purchasing this coverage at the state minimum limits can usually save you a good deal of money on your premiums. If you have a financed or leased vehicle your lien-holder may require you to carry comprehensive and collision coverage. This coverage is more expensive but it beats getting stuck with a car note on a severely damaged vehicle. You may also want to consider gap coverage if you will owe more on your vehicle than it is worth a couple of years down the road.

Always obtain a copy of your driving record. Auto insurance companies may count violations against you for anywhere from three years to ten years. When you are shopping for insurance it is important to know what's on your record. Some companies DO NOT check your motor vehicle report when giving you a free quote over the phone. This could lead to a premium adjustment if and when you do decide to purchase a policy with them.

Some companies also use consumer credit reports like C.L.U.E to determine what kind of rate they give you on auto insurance. If you have poor credit or a history of claims this could really make your rate go up. If you have poor credit it may be a good idea to ask if they are going to do a credit check before you even bother getting a quote from that company.

Before you purchase auto insurance check with your state's department of insurance and find out what kind of service they have provided to other customers in the past. Your state's department of insurance will have a record of complaints against that company. How your auto insurance company handles claims will make the difference if you do have an accident. Will they be there for the medical bills, rental car bills, and lawsuits that often occur when accidents happen?

The real secret to buying good auto insurance coverage is to purchase the best coverage at an affordable price with a company that will be there for you when you need them. The insurance market is flooded with companies offering one-click solutions but the only way to know that you are getting the best price possible is comparison shopping. This means knowing what coverages you currently have and what you are paying for those coverages. It also means you need to devote some time to the process. The trend in the insurance industry over the past couple of years has been to make buying car insurance like buying fast food. Just remember you don't have to sign a contract to eat at McDonalds.
