How Christian schools can help troubled teens

A Christian school can be an extremely beneficial setting for troubled teens, but parents should be wary of falling under the delusion that placing their teens in such a school will lead to the solution of all problems. In many cases, a teen's school environment can be hugely beneficial to their growth and maturation, but sadly, in some cases, placement in a Christian school can lead to further isolation or rebellion. Each situation should be assessed individually and, if the school setting and the teen appear compatible, then enrollment should be sought. In addition there needs to be participation in an active, relevant church or youth group and, most importantly, a home life which supports the ideals of the school.

Arguably, the greatest benefit of a Christian School is the immersion of the community in the Word of God, which, coupled with the prayers of staff, parents, students and associated church members, is essential in developing a mature, well balanced life. When students are remembered in prayer daily, and teachers constantly seek God's help in carrying out their tasks, there is a definite spiritual blessing on the school and its community.

Many Christian schools offer the benefit of smaller class sizes than government schools, with higher staff/student ratios. It is not unusual to have ancillary staff, pastoral staff, classroom assistants and parental involvement in higher numbers than state schools. A significant emphasis is placed upon pastoral care and students who are experiencing difficulties are well supported, on all levels physical, educational and spiritual.

Smaller class sizes are advantageous for students with learning or attention difficulties, however, one hurdle faced by independent Christian schools in Australia is the lack of funding for special needs students in comparison to government schools. In many cases, there may be alternative means of raising funds, but in some instances, this financial constraint may make the Christian school an inappropriate choice.

When the majority of students in a school are from Christian homes, or at least homes sympathetic to Christian standards, teens are less likely to be faced with peer pressured situations involving alcohol, drugs and illicit or anti social behaviour. One would be naive to assume that the student community was totally immune from such issues, but certainly they are far less prevalent than in other schools.

In many Christian schools, the social groups are lead by strong, Christian teens and the student body looks to role models of excellent character. Good friends can help turn the path of a troubled teen around. Many times, a troubled teen is crying out for encouraging, uplifting relationships with peers (and adults). There are occasions though, when a troubled teen may feel condemned or rejected by other students. Self esteem may take a battering and the teen will spiral further into rebellion or withdrawal.

From time to time, particular Christian schools may experience difficulties, on any number of levels and, to be certain, there are great state schools, with excellent programs to help troubled teens. Generally speaking though, Christian schools offer an educational experience that is concerned with mind, body and spirit. God is continually upheld and called upon and His blessing is the greatest benefit that can be offered to any student.

If parents place God as the head of the home and endorse the work of the school; if they surround themselves and their teens with Christian friends and support networks; and if they pray continually for their troubled teens then the school has optimum opportunity for success.
