There is only one sure-fire way to prevent a DUI - don't drive drunk. Whether you're completely hammered or just a little tipsy, you shouldn't be driving. Staying from behind the wheel while intoxicated not only saves you from an unwanted DUI, it also:
1) Saves Lives. According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), about 17,602 people died in alcohol related traffic accidents in 2006. That's nearly 18,000 deaths that could have been prevented.
2) Saves Money. Thomas von Hemert, a criminal justice expert, calculated the cost of a first offense conviction for DUI to be up to $20,000. This figure only includes the cost of bail, fines, vehicle towing, and court fees. Tack on the money spent for damages (to cars and property) and medical bills, and you could easily be out of a couple of years' worth of salary.
3) Saves Time. Court appearances and jail time are not only costly to your wallet, but to your time. Whether it's a few hours, a few days, or a few years you've still lost precious time that you can't get back.
Drunk driving and DUIs can easily be avoided if you think before you drink. Take the time to devise a plan of action that will keep you from having to drive while inebriated. Try these tips.
- When you go out, take a friend along who's not going to drink. A sober buddy makes an excellent designated driver. He or she would also be more likely to talk you out of driving yourself home if you've had too many drinks.
- If you're out alone, call a cab, a friend, or a family member to come and pick you up. If you're too drunk to make a call, ask someone to help you.
- Invest in a breathalyzer. Consumer versions are relatively inexpensive, many less than $100. They take away all of the guesswork; you'll know for sure if you're sober enough to drive or not. You can also use it to check your friends' alcohol levels.
Some problems in life are unavoidable. Fortunately, getting a DUI is not one of them. Drunk driving is 100% preventable. Think before you drink.
