"Health" Insurance For Vehicles?
Why isn't there some kind of "health" insurance for older vehicles? I think its pretty obvious that if you have an old vehicle, you probably don't have a whole lot of money to throw around, which means if something major goes wrong, which it probably will, you probably can't get your vehicle fixed immediately.
I was driving home from the bank today, stopped at a light, about to turn left, the light turned green, I started to go and no sooner did I give it a little gas and let out on the clutch did I hear a loud thump and then the sound of metal scraping against the ground. There were cars behind me so I kept trying to go and eventually got loose of whatever I had driven over, as I turned I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a big hunk of metal sitting in the road behind me. I had a pretty good feeling it was something that had fallen off my truck since I'm pretty sure I would have seen that thing sitting in the road when I pulled up to the light. I pulled over in a parking lot and called a friend to come help me since I didn't know what this thing was, and didn't know if it was heavy or how long my truck could run without it if it was something pretty necessary.
I watched as one guy finally got out of his truck and moved it out of the middle of the road about the time my friend got there. We went and checked it out, I sent a picture of it to my boyfriend who quickly identified it as my muffler and was amazed that I had managed to get my truck inspected a couple weeks prior to this. From the looks of it, this muffler wasn't doing me any good anyway, its all burned up with a ton of holes in it. I don't know anything about mufflers, but I don't think you would have to in order to know that this one is worthless.
This isn't my first vehicle to start falling apart on me though, this is probably more like the 6th or 7th in the past 6 years. I don't have money to get a new muffler, and I don't have money for a ticket if I get one for not having a muffler. So, what do I do? I'm going to have to risk the ticket. But, what if there was some type of "health" insurance for vehicles? I know the newer vehicles have warranties and stuff like that, but something affordable or even free. Like Medicare or Medicaid. Only for old vehicles. I would be able to put my truck in the shop, get the parts replaced, maybe pay a small deductable or even nothing and I'd be back on the road again. Oh, how sweet would that be! Getting a tune-up would be like getting a physical at the doctor. Any major work of course would be like an organ transplant probably cost quite a bit more, but would be entirely necessary in the end, and still cheaper than paying for it all out-of-pocket. It sounds like a great idea to me, but maybe I live in dreamworld.
