WHY DOES TERRORISM EXIST?
Why terrorism exists is a question of opinion based on one's role in the act. To one group, it exists as a way to demonstrate the seriousness or urgency behind a particular societal or political point of view. To another group, it exists only to destroy the lives of innocent people. And to another yet, it exists as a phenomenon in accordance to fate.
To Make a Point
Those who perform terroristic acts see it as their duty. Some do it for their country. Some do it for their religion. Some do it for themselves - that little voice inside their head. Whatever the case, these terrorists perform an unspeakable deed because it is asked of them in some manner.
Kamikazes began during World War II. These Japanese suicide attacks, including crash-destined flights and human-steered torpedoes, aimed at injuring as many Allied troops as possible. Though this kind of action was relatively new at the time, the concept of dying with honor dates back to Japan's 12th century bushi, or samurai class. The warriors felt it loyal and honorable to die for the emperor, and would rather kill themselves than be defeated or imprisoned by another.
Many people in this world are guided by their faith. The Koran(1), the holy book of Islam, explains:
[4.66] And if We had prescribed for them: Lay down your lives or go forth from your homes, they would not have done it except a few of them; and if they had done what they were admonished, it would have certainly been better for them and best in strengthening them.
[4.69] And whoever obeys Allah and the Apostle, these are with those upon whom Allah has bestowed favors from among the prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the good, and a goodly company are they!
[48.16] Say to those of the dwellers of the desert who were left behind: You shall soon be invited to fight against a people possessing mighty prowess; you will fight against them until they submit; then if you obey, Allah will grant you a good reward; and if you turn back as you turned back before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.
When it is taught from childhood that giving your life will lead to great rewards, and rebelling will lead to anguish and suffering, the idea becomes a learned behavior. It is taken to heart that martyrdom is an accepted and often expected part of life. Young men and women alike are encouraged to support the Koran's teaching in this way.
