The Democrats were forced to abandon their strategy for a timetable withdrawal. I believe they finally discovered that the majority of the American people, while we all want the war to end and to bring our troops home, we do not want a repeat of Vietnam. We left Vietnam in defeat and disgrace after years of losing lives trying to support an unpopular government. The difference between the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan war is that we helped two countries rid themselves of unpopular governments.
If we bring the troops home and telegraph to our enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan as to when we intend to do that, will allow them to lay back and plan their future tactics as to how and when to move back into the areas we have helped to liberate. That is something that average Americans can figure out on their own. It is very surprising to me that it took the Democrats so long to figure it out. Or did they? Maybe what they really discovered is that if you bring all the troops home in the same year the Democrats take office it would create a financial problem for them. Since most of the troops are not full time recruits, what will they do for work when they get back? Will they be able to take their old jobs back? By law they are entitled to, but then what happens to the person that performed that job while the troops were fighting for our country.
Did the Democrats get it through their thick skulls that if we don't have a magnet, other then our home soil, to attract the terrorists to then they will return to their favorite target. Us! Did they, the Democrats, finally get the message that Al Qaeda's doesn't want peace with us, they want us to believe exactly as they do or die. If Al Qaeda really cared about people do you think they would be sending women and children, with bombs strapped their bodies, into a crowd of innocent people to blow themselves up!
The Democrats have backed away from a timeline for only one reason. They will say or do anything to get into the White House. If they really thought that sticking to a timeline would get them elected, they would still be talking about.
