George Bush has made the US more unpopular on the world stage than ever before.
During his 8 years as President, he has done and said many things that have angered allies and provoked enemies.
Bush's crusade to bring American democracy to the entire world has not only failed to free any oppressed peoples but it has had the opposite effect of making the leaders of those people more popular than ever.
When President Bush arrogantly proclaimed that "if you are not with us, you are against us" and "those countries that harbor terrorists are terrorists themselves" Islamic countries took that as a threat against their very existence.
Is George Bush responsible for making us a target?
President Bill Clinton was loved worldwide. Whenever he visited another country, he was treated like a rock star. Under Clinton, the world experienced a surge of pro-American sentiment.
When you turned on the TV, you would see thousands of people cheering and waving as President Clinton's motorcade drove through the country.
What you didn't see on TV were the terrorist training camps and the vast network of Al-Qaeda affiliated groups honing their craft. While Clinton schmoozed, the terrorists prepared for the opportunity to strike a deadly blow against the what fanatics perceive as the gravest threat the Islamic world has ever known, the United States of America.
America is a vibrant and thriving Democracy. She has always been a melting pot of religions, races and ethnicities.
That type of tolerance and acceptance is precisely the reason we are a target. For as long as our country has existed there have been groups that wish to destroy it.
Interestingly, the Osama bin Ladens of the world have something in common with President Bush.
They too believe that "if you are not with us, you are against us."
Like Bush, they also believe that there is no middle ground.
There is a big difference, though.
Bush is trying to spread freedom around the world by eliminating those who threaten it.
Terrorists are trying to threaten freedom around the world by eliminating those who spread it.
Everything America stands for is an abomination in the eyes of religious fanatics.
In the name of Islam, terrorist have one goal, to wipe America off the face of the Earth.
Neither President Bush nor President Clinton nor any other President either before or after them are responsible for terrorist threats against America.
The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution are to blame.
Those documents and the freedom and liberty they protect are the reason we became targets.
Terrorists claim they act in the name of Islam. Nothing could be further from the truth.
They want power. The power to oppress the very people they claim to be protecting from the "Great Satan", the U.S..
People that follow Islam only want what everyone else wants. A long and happy life for them and their families, free from persecution and oppression.
America and its Constitution offers them that opportunity.
Terrorists believe the only way to stop oppressed people from realizing that dream is make that dream cease to exist, in the name of Islam.
How did the United States of America become a target of terrorism?
By becoming the United States of America.
