Alternative therapies for arthritis

With all the advances being made in modern medicine, our life expectancy has greatly increased. Unfortunately, these advances have failed to find a cure for many painful conditions, such as arthritis. The result is, we're living longer, in chronic pain. Conventional treatment often proves to be ineffective and comes with the risk of side effects. In recent years, the interest in alternative therapy has been on the rise. Arthritis sufferers are turning towards it, as a way to alleviate pain. Some of these alternative treatments, you may be aware of, while others may seem a little bizarre.

Acupuncture

It is believed that acupuncture corrects imbalances in the body's energy flow. This is done by targeting certain acupuncture points. The standard method involves puncturing the skin with long needles. Recently variations have been implemented. Some of these include the use of heat, friction, pressure, suction or electrical stimulation. Bringing the body back to a proper balance can relieve stress and ease pain.

Magnetic Therapy

Electromagnetic fields are delivered to the painful area. Electrodes are placed on, or directed towards the target area. This has proved to be a safe way to decrease pain and increase body function. This therapy should be avoided by certain people, such as those who are pregnant, have pacemakers or are suffering from cancer.

Exercise

Some may require the exercises to be modified for them. This can be an effective way of relieving symptoms.

Hydrotherapy

This technique uses water for therapeutic purposes. Some examples are, mineral baths, water jet massages and hot springs. The warm water puts no extra pressure on the joints and greatly helps to reduce stiffness.

Mind-Body Techniques

Draws upon the interaction between the mind, emotions and the body as a whole. This can be an effective means of symptom management. Relaxation therapy, tai chi and spirituality classes, can be of benefit. Relaxing the mind, calms the body and rids it of tension.

Fish Oil

Fish oil contains large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. The body uses it to produce substances that reduce inflammation.

Protoltherapy

Solutions of natural substances are injected directly into the site where the weakened ligament attaches to the bone. This triggers the immune system to grow healthy, new tissue that properly stabilizes bones and joints.

Aromatherapy

The use of oils extracted from plants seems to enhance health. These oils can be used in many ways, such as baths, massage, inhalation, vapors and
