Simple tips to prevent a DUI

This year over 2,500 people will die in Washington State alone due to someone else or themselves driving under the influence of alcohol. It is quite possible the driver could be killed as well leaving families devastated and questions unanswered. People will die because someone refused to listen to a friend who told them not to drive. Perhaps thinking they could defy the law, driving the short trip home was no big deal. So many people are under the impression they are a better drivers with a couple under the belt than when sober. I used to be one of those people until a car crash sobered me up real quick. I was driving in the mountains and could have easily plunged 300 feet to my death. Luckily I didn't and I was alone. Not being hurt too bad I learned a valuable lesson about driving under the influence.

Some tips to remember before you get behind the wheel of a car after going out with the boys or the girls:

First, make sure you have a designated driver and make sure that the designated driver doesn't drink. If you don't have a designated driver then,

Second, know your limit. Don't think you can test yourself with one more just because you are the only person who wants to go home. The idea is to get home and to get home safely while making sure everyone else is safe as well.

Third, wait before you drive if you do drink. Have some water it will help to dilute what is in your system. Coffee is not really a good idea it's hot and seems to bring about a longer lasting feeling of having had to much alcohol.

Fourth, set a time to stop drinking and to go home and then stick to it. There is always another time and another day if you are wise. Remember you are not the only person on the street and how you drive could affect someone else's life.

Fifth, if you have had to much to drink then call a cab or a friend. A cab might cost money but it's worth it to save your life or someone else's. If you have a true friend they will come and pick you up no matter the time because they don't want you to drink and drive.

Finally, be smart. Don't drink too much alcohol when you go out to party, you can still have fun without getting drunk.
