generated, often at a coal-fired power station, or by the cleaner fuel, natural gas. Modern coal-fired power stations employ electrostatic precipitators to remove the particulate matter from the exhaust gas stream which is also scrubbed with a water spray to remove the SO2 and other poisonous gases, resulting in a harmless release of gases out the station chimney. The white plumes arising from power station chimneys as shown on television propaganda news is just steam, like the clouds above.
What about car exhausts which pollute our city atmospheres? In some places this is a serious problem. I live in Adelaide, South Australia which has a population of about 1 million and here it is not a problem, nor in other Australian cities as far as I know, because regular winds blow the fumes away and geographically, they are not located in sheltered valleys. During the summer we may get a short term natural smog caused by periodic bush fires and dust storms about which we have to put up with.
But have you ever looked at night for stars in the sky when visiting Mexico City? or Los Angeles, or Beijing? None! , but they are there above the smog layer. So here is a problem.
Americans are great innovators and according to Mr Bush, new technology will solve all problems. I agree. That's why the US has refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol rather than blindly follow, like lemmings, the EU inspired global warming hysteria and support the move to a "de-carbonized world" sure to result in global economic ruin.
The US invention of the "catalytic converter" for car exhausts is said to reduce noxious gases by 95% and has become mandatary for cars in many California cities. This move , coupled with modern cars having more clean burning and efficient engines, has made a significant improvement in air quality in some US cities.
"Hey..... what about pollution by man-made CO2 emissions?" Well, if you believe that you'll believe there are fairies in the bottom of your garden.
CO2 is a wonderful, valuable, harmless atmospheric gas that is essential for plant growth, like oxygen is for us human beings to live. Currently it amounts to about 385 ppm in the atmosphere and there should be more of it. About 1000 ppm would be ideal to improve our crop and forest growth rates but I doubt if we could ever achieve that because excessive amounts soon dissolve in the oceans which cover 70% of our planet.
Also, there is no scientific evidence that CO2 emissions cause global warming, which incidentally isn't happening .....sorry, no detectable warming since 1998. A coming Ice Age is more likely, if you study the recent scientific literature.
So the good news is that all we have to do is sort out the climate change alarmists and our gullible politicians, including Al Gore .
