Putting the 'Merry' back in 'Merry Christmas'

Recently, as I've ventured reluctantly from childhood to adulthood, I've begun to notice the way that adults (particularly parents) approach Christmas. It seems that as we grow older, the classic holiday begins to lose its magical spark, and is instead replaced with a sense of looming doom. There's presents to buy at ridiculous prices, crowds to fight at the local department store, cards that need to go out to all the family on time, food to buy and prepare if you're unlucky enough to be hosting this years Christmas feast, decorations to hang, dull office parties to attend, children's concerts and recitals to go to, and that's only the beginning.

What we of the older generation (or should I say you? I'm hoping I don't qualify)need to do is sit back and remember what Christmas is really all about. It's about getting together with family you haven't seen forever, not trying to show up Aunt Mildred by sending out Christmas cards that are obviously more expensive than hers. It's about seeing your child's face light up when you plug in the Christmas tree lights, not trying to outdo your neighbours outdoor lights display. It's about how Christmas started in the first place, and not counting how many presents under the tree have your name on it.
So what if Wal-Mart and Marks&Spencer's is crowded? Think of it as tradition. Would it really be Christmas if you didn't see at least one pair of moms fighting over the last dinosaur robot?
Christmas is about more than the materialistic views of this world. With that in mind, delve into this season with a smile on your face, a glint in your eye, and a pronounced 'Merry Christmas!' to everyone you see.
