Christianity began with the birth of one man, Jesus of Nazareth, or Jesus Christ as we call him. It has spread to every corner of the globe, gone through every crisis possible and still stands strong at the hands of secularism, humanism, atheism and any other 'ism' that it has come up against. Jesus said He would never leave his Church and that the Holy Spirit would guide her through the channels of time and turbulence: she still stands.
But Christianity wears a different face now; it is like a multi-faceted gem with so many sides that many of the facets would not be recognizable as Christian at all. Christianity seems, from an objective view, watered down and worn out. It has faded and given way to the inevitabilities of time. But are they inevitabilities? Do not the original tenets and truths still hold? Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life". If Christ is, indeed, still here, then the Truth is a kernel that will always bear fruit, however the weeds try to choke it out.
In all of the polls taken concerning religion in America, 80% say they are practicing Christians. This is hard to believe when one looks at society and the shocking state of our American culture. But the last decade has seen a reversal in the fortunes of Christian Churches in our country. A few courageous men and women have begun to stand up and ask for an accounting from their ministers, priests, bishops...in short, all the religious leaders. True believers are pulling together to protect and proclaim the truth in word and action. Christianity may be scorned, but Christians have begun to reclaim their right to a moral and ethical society for themselves and their children.
On the heels of the visit of Pope Benedict, the world was left reeling with the joy and love people of all faiths, all colors and all ages as they gathered by the tens of thousands to show their solidarity to the faith. His message was one at once of unity and divergence. No longer can Christians takes sides against each other, they must take up arms against the immorality and hatred of those who would tamp them down. The Pope let it be known that a small flock, faithful and strong, is preferable to teeming masses of lukewarm dissenters. This holds for all Christian religions, and will create a stronger, more vibrant Christianity that will draw souls towards it like a warming fire. This is because the Truth is beautiful.
