Store reviews: Once Upon a Child

Every parent knows that saving money and cutting corners where you can helps. You have to feed, diaper, clothe and entertain your little ones. You want to ensure safety and health as well. At Once Upon A Child, you can get things in good shape for less than retail. It has many advantages but there are also several disadvantages.

The upside of this store is that you get things you need or want without paying full price. You can also sell your gently used items to them for cash. With consignment stores, you get paid a portion of the price they sell it for after they sell it. They will pay you upfront for the items. The store does have a look and feel much like a consignment store, but the items are cleaner and in better condition. The quality is immeasurably better than what you will find at a Goodwill. There is generally a good selection of every baby item you might need. If you go to a consignment store or yard sale you don't get variety. You can take a pick between a few strollers, for instance, instead of seeing one priced reasonably at a yard sale and going with it.

If you wouldn't take hand-me-downs from your distant cousin or someone at church, you wouldn't probably be a good fit for this store. This store is for people who don't mind things being second-hand.

The disadvantages to shopping at Once Upon A Child are concerning safety. Car seats should always include all the paperwork that came with the car seat. If it does not have the paperwork, you should check for the company's phone number listed on the seat and order the manual. The manual will include cleaning and installation instructions and a list of parts that should be on or come with the car seat. Proper installation of car seats are vital to your child's safety. Guessing at it puts an innocent life at risk. Even if it does come with paperwork, you will need to contact the company and inquire about recall information or any updates for safety have been issued on this particular model. If you do buy a model that has been recalled, the manufacturer may be willing to exchange it for another one. If your seat is missing parts you can generally order them from the company. The safest way to go is to never buy a car seat second hand. Some charities that give away car seats will not take used car seats.

You should closely inspect any swings, cribs, mobiles, strollers or any other assembled items for defects and missing parts. You should also try to get items with manuals or any other paperwork. Some of these items will come with a number to contact the manufacturer to get one. If these items break or fail due to missing parts or because they were faulty and recalled by the manufacturer your child could be at risk.

Thankfully Once Upon a Child does try to keep up with safety recalls and purchase only gently used items. So this may only be a problem once in a while. The Chain tries to keep stores neat and uncluttered. They can save you money if you are a thrifty shopper who doesn't mind second hand items.
