Poetry: Seeds

With no defined destination
The bounty of flowering seeds
Scatter with purpose to the four winds
In unnoticed flight until settling down

Those alighting where the sun shines too hot
And where only shifting sand is the earth
Incessantly tumble about on the infertile soil
Never taking root in the parched ground

Those that settle on soil far too wet
Bog down to decay before they can increase
Too much or too little sun or rain is a waste
With either excess ending in barren brown

But those seeds that land on fertile soil
Sprout when their thirst is quenched with the rain
And when the sun warms their perky green shoots
Their strong stems thrive and fearlessly abound

When the stems' expectant buds transform into blooms
Those full blossoms linger for more than a moment
Until their green leaves and colorful petals fade
Drying to a ragged and crumpled brown

Then the flowers release their seeded treasure
To begin the cycle of life all over again
Scattering with purpose to the four winds
In unnoticed flight until once more settling down
