Tips for planning an inexpensive family vacation

In order to deal with all of life's chaos, an annual vacation is a must. Whether it's excitement, adventure, or serenity that you seek, everyone should get the chance to plan the vacation of their dreams. But there's one problem: vacations cost money. Here are a few tips that can make a great vacation while not breaking the bank.

IF YOU ARE FLYING: Although looking on-line for airline tickets may be time consuming, travel agents charge a service fee and often don't give customers the best deals. Try browsing the Internet for discount ticket sites, and make sure you start your search at least three months before the departure date.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING: If the whole family can fit comfortably, definitely drive a car over an SUV or van. Smaller cars get much better gas mileage. Map out your route ahead of time to make sure you don't do any unnecessary driving. Hungry? Pack snacks and drinks to avoid tourist traps and rest stops where food prices skyrocket.

TRAVEL OUT OF SEASON: The cold months of winter, and spring break are the most popular travel times of the year. Try vacationing over the summer or early fall. Many well-traveled areas lower food, gas, lodging. and even souvenir prices. Plus the places you want to visit will be less crowded.

BOOK WITH A KITCHEN: If you aren't able to stay with family or friends, try to reserve a hotel or condo with a kitchen. It's great to dine out a few times over vacation but cooking most meals yourself will save hundreds of dollars. No need to tip the waiter or pay $3.50 a soda. Cooking with loved ones can be just as fun as eating out.

ENJOY FREE ACTIVITIES: The best activities aren't necessarily the most expensive. Try going to a public park or beach for the day. If you're in a new area, try exploring the unchartered territory. Go for a hike, take a swim, lounge in the sun; not all fun comes from opening a wallet.

SHOPPING: Everyone wants souvenirs to remember their vacations, but where is the best place to buy them? Make sure to buy local. You can buy designer and chain store items anywhere, but if there are true local shops definitely peruse them first. Usually small boutiques or even tents, these shops will have the most authentic (and cheaper) souvenirs that everyone will enjoy.

Now all that's left to do is plan. Start early and make sure your calendar is clear. When the time comes you'll be amazed how enjoyable, and inexpensive, a family vacation can be.
