I am sure this scenario has happened to a lot of parents: You buy your children clothes and then what seems like only days later, there are holes in the knees of pants or stains that won't come out. With so many families on budgets, not many can afford to just buy new when items when the old ones wear out. So how can you purchase nice clothes for your children and still get your money's worth?
PLAY CLOTHES vs. NICE CLOTHES
When shopping for children, especially younger children, pick up a few cheaper items for "play" clothes. These would be clothes that you do not mind if they get torn, holes, stained or any other damage a child could do. Also, instead of getting rid of clothes that may not fit your child, keep them for one more season and perhaps use them as play clothes. If your child goes to school, then have them change their clothes as soon as they get home so that their nicer wardrobe is not ruined. By having two types of clothing for your child, you are not only getting your money's worth out of their wardrobe, but you are extending the life of their clothes as well.
QUALITY
Of course you get what you pay for and as much as I would like to tell you to purchase cheaper items that just means you will get cheaper quality. The key is to purchase quality items at rock bottom prices. Scout out ebay.com, craigslist.org, or even yard sales and consignment shops for high quality items. Jeans and pants always seem to take a beating so look for the thicker denim so that they can hold up against the rough play of children. The same goes when you purchase footwear. Keep in mind that shoes and boots cost a lot of money and for good reason. Shoes are worn out really quickly so consider purchasing a few nice pair of shoes and/or boots and buy a pair or two of cheap sneakers for your child to beat up.
DON'T IMPULSE SHOP
Do not shop on impulse. By doing this you will be picking up extra clothes that your child may never wear. Trust me, I have a closet full of clothing with tags just because they were "so cute" in the store. Since children grow so fast and go through major growth spurts, you will get your money's worth from clothes simply by purchasing less clothing.
Basically, do not buy cheap, but do not buy overpriced designer clothing. Stay with the quality items at a decent price and no doubt, you will definitely get your money's worth and then some.
