Simple tips to prevent a DUI

In this day and age, one would think that preventing a DUI would be a no-brainer. In the simplest terms, don't drive drunk. But sometimes circumstances are beyond your control, and with your judgment impaired, it may be difficult to make that deceptively simple and logical decision. However, there are some ways you can stack the odds of getting through a bender in your favor.

♦ The Designated Driver

Easily the best way to avoid getting behind the wheel yourself is to make sure someone else is there to do it for you. Someone you can trust, and obviously someone who knows how to get you home without directions.

♦ Take a Cab

If you don't have a buddy who is willing to forego drinking in favor of driving, take a cab. And not just home, but take one to the bar or club. You can't drive while intoxicated if you don't have a vehicle available.

♦ A Drinking Schedule

The rule of thumb is that it takes one hour for each beer/mixed drink/glass of wine to metabolize through your system. So, if you know that your night out will only last four hours, limit yourself to no more than four drinks. And for extra safety, it may be a good idea to spend the last hour of your night drinking non-alcoholic drinks, and maybe munching on some solid food.

♦ Sleep It Off

When all else fails, take a nap before driving home. Just get in your car, lay the seat back and close your eyes. If you're at a friend's house, ask if there is a couch or spare bed you can borrow. Using the same rule of thumb as above, sleep for one hour for each drink you have had over the number of hours you spent drinking. For instance, if you drank five beers in three hours, sleeping an extra two hours will get you in shape. Of course, if you're a late partier, it might just be better to sleep through the rest of the night.

The key to not getting pulled over is obviously to not be behind the wheel while intoxicated. And following these tips, there's really no excuse for being caught at all. It's just common sense, which should still be available before you start drinking.
