Bible study: The Bible and Me
The Bible is the Word of God. What does that have to do with you? What does its being the Word of God mean to you?
I once heard Dr. Don Jennings say "You can be as doctrinally straight as a gun barrel and be as spiritually empty as a gun barrel." There needs to be more than your just saying that you believe it is the inspired, infallible, inerrant Word of God. "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22)
There are a lot of people who do not have even one page of the Bible. You can get it so easily, cheaply, in a multitude of versions that are easy to read, a rainbow of colors, and with all the study helps that would be needed for a first grader to be a Bible genius. Having all of these, if you do not value it, and love it, it will be of little profit at all. In fact, it will condemn you. You have no excuse for the mess you make of your life.
1. Psalm 119:97 (Observation) - What did the Psalmist's love for the Bible cause him to do?
He Meditated on it all the day.
a. (Interpretation) What does he mean by that?
"I have thought about it, but how do I meditate?" Enjoy it; ponder its meaning; look for evidences of it in what is going on around you; think about what it has to do with your life...
b. (Application) - What are some verses you have found yourself meditating on throughout the day? What is there about that verse that had you thinking about it?
Notice, he is doing this because of his attitude toward the Bible. When you love it, you will naturally think about it a lot.
2. (Observation) - What is God's attitude toward the Bible in Psalm138:2?
"... you have exalted above all things
your name and your word."
We are to praise and glorify the name of God, hold it high for worship and honor. God has placed His Word that high. He wants us to praise and glorify His Word, hold it high for worship and honor, just as high as His Name.
If you are ever around a Muslim, be very careful what you do with your Bible. The Muslims hold their Koran in very high esteem. It is kept in a prominent place in the home, up high where it will not be bumped, and where nothing will be set on it. They never just throw it on the floor, on a seat, or a table. They think that Christians do not think that the Bible is very special because we do all those things with our Bibles.
(Application) - It is good to learn to treat an expensive book with care so that it will last, especially your Bible. Perhaps we have something
