Memoirs: Why I write

by Ron Schecker

Created on: April 30, 2008

I never really got into writing until I was in my mid 20's. I was out on my own after moving from home. I had broken up with my girlfriend and was trying to find something to pass the time. So one day, I picked up a pen and just began to write. Back then it was strictly poems that would come to me. But as time went on, I would try to write something other than just prose.

Fast forward to 1996. I had always been curious about keeping a life journal. Well, that was what I called it back then. I went out and bought a 3-ring binder, some unlined paper. On one side would be my "dreamside" and on the other would be my "daily living" side. I didn't think I would be able to keep up with it, but believe it or not, the more and more I did it the easier it became for me. To be able to express myself in another way besides my voice meant..and STILL means...a great deal to me. I can happily say that I have never missed a single entry in over 12 years and 4081 entries later (WHEW!)

Then I discovered the wonderful world of blog entries. I have written countless of them over the years, and the one thing I get told more than anything is: "WOW! I can actually hear you SAY those things!" Truth be told, that is how I have always written (in case you haven't figured out by now). I write the way I speak and express myself as if you were, dear reader, standing right in front of me. I mean, really...who just wants to read ONLY words on a screen or piece of paper? Why not EMPHASIZE key words when necessary? I also try to seriously paint the mental picture one expects to get from the written word.

As for WHY I write, well, that's easy really. I write because it is a way for me to show the world what I feel inside. How I view everyday occurrences with people, and what makes me tick. I can't tell you how many people have called me "difficult to understand" In truth, I am EASY to know. All anyone has to do is ask me a direct question and the direct answer will follow. But even when people ask me a question, they still feel there is more to me than meets the eye. Well DUH! EVERYONE is like that. There are more than just 1 fact to this unpolished diamond. I don't hide that fact at all. I also know that may startle some, but there are those who relish that.

So there ya have it. In a nutshell.
